Beyond the Screen: Reflecting on Values and Purposes in the Digital Age

Today, I want to invite you to reflect on a theme that has become omnipresent in our lives: technology addiction. However, I propose a different approach, inspired by one of my reflections: “Technology addiction is merely a symptom of lack of focus, not its cause. The root lies in our values and purposes.”

We live in an era where incessant smartphone notifications, endless scrolling on social media, and constant demands for our digital attention seem to dominate our everyday lives. But is technology the villain of this story, or does it simply reveal a deeper void in our values and purposes?

This reflection invites us to look beyond the surface, to question not only how we interact with technology but why we allow ourselves to be consumed by it. Technology, at its core, is a tool, a means to achieve various ends. The crux of the problem, therefore, does not lie in the tool itself but in how we use it.

Real Values vs. Virtual Ones: To what extent have our values been replaced or influenced by what we value in the digital environment? Are we prioritizing virtual interactions at the expense of authentic human connections?

Purpose and Meaning: Technology often fills a void of purpose in our lives. How can we redirect our focus to find meaning and satisfaction beyond the screen?

The Quest for Attention: The design of digital platforms is geared towards capturing our attention. However, how does this affect our ability to focus and dedicate time to what truly matters?

Autonomy over Digital Consumption: How can we exert greater control over our technology consumption, in a way that serves our values and purposes, rather than the other way around?

Reconnection with the Inner Self: Ultimately, the solution to technology addiction may lie in reconnecting with our inner values and redefining our purposes. How can we cultivate this reconnection?
