WHY IT’S IMPORTANT NOT TO GIVE UP ON YOUR CAREER – CAREER COACHING IN PRACTICE

Throughout all these years, I’ve had the incredible opportunity to serve and connect with leaders and executives from various spheres and dimensions of business. These enriching interactions have led me to a fundamental conclusion: beyond mere tenacity, there’s a critical element that all those who have achieved professional success share – resilience. However, these individuals had something extra that was special. Driven by their vivid dreams, they grounded their journey in solid arguments, which helped them stay firm in the face of failures and adversities. This is because they also had clarity about their purposes. I have no doubt that this unique combination not only helped them shape their destinies through repeated attempts, full of trials and errors, but also explains the trajectory of many characters who made history by overcoming chance.

The fact is that the career journey is a journey of discoveries, challenges, and achievements that shape our professional destiny. Two fundamental forces play crucial roles in this journey: resilience and purpose. Resilience is the ability to overcome obstacles and adversities, emerging stronger and fortified. Purpose, on the other hand, is the core of will, giving meaning and direction to our actions, an internal compass guiding each step in the pursuit of success. These two elements, though distinct, are interdependent and, when harmonized, form a solid foundation for a rewarding career.

I invite you today to this exploration, where we will delve into this fundamental universe for professional life – resilience and purpose. I want to help you understand how the interconnection between these two values is essential to successfully navigate the challenging waters of the professional world. Throughout this text, we will explore how resilience and purpose intertwine, as well as highlight the importance of balancing these two elements to build a successful and meaningful career. Additionally, in the end, I will help you embark on a preliminary career coaching journey, to stimulate your own self-discovery and learning, unraveling your own secrets and with them, shaping a professional trajectory that transcends challenges and reaches horizons of fulfillment.

Resilience as One of the Pillars

In the dynamics of the contemporary professional landscape, every step towards success is marked by challenges and unexpected turns. It is in this context that resilience emerges as an essential pillar for building a solid and rewarding career. Resilience transcends the mere concept of overcoming adversities; it is value; it is the ability to adapt, learn, and grow from experiences that could often knock down even the most determined. In a career, resilience manifests as the force that drives the relentless pursuit of improvement, regardless of circumstances.

I know many aspire to a world of calmness! Imagining a professional journey without obstacles or setbacks. Wow! How inviting! But, don’t be fooled! A narrative devoid of challenges is also a lukewarm trajectory, without opportunities for growth. We don’t learn anything in calm waters! It’s adversities that teach us. That lead us to a systemic world. That test our ability to deal with complex situations, to react increasingly senior and constructively to pressure, and to find creative, unique, differentiated solutions amid the turbulence of the reality in which we live. That’s why resilience in a career is not just about “overcoming” difficulties, but about learning from them to face a real world with a mindset that values continuous learning to accelerate one’s own process of personal and professional growth.

This ability takes on different forms throughout the professional journey. From adapting to organizational changes to recovering after a professional setback – resilience is the force that keeps us steady when facing uncertainty. For example, a resilient professional doesn’t get discouraged by an unachieved promotion but sees it as an opportunity for self-discovery and to better prepare for future challenges.

Furthermore, resilience doesn’t operate in isolation; it interacts intrinsically with purpose. Having clarity about purpose gives resilience a direction. When we understand why we’re fighting, when we have a higher purpose guiding our efforts, our resilience transforms into an even more powerful force. It’s not just about dealing with difficulties but about embracing the lessons they offer, adapting to the ever-evolving environment, and maintaining determination to achieve meaningful goals.

In summary, resilience is the anchor that keeps us steady amidst the turbulent winds of our careers. It is the ability to not only survive but to thrive in the face of challenges. In a dynamic and competitive market, where change is constant and complexity is the norm, resilience is the quality that prevents us from giving up and empowers us to turn obstacles into opportunities. However, resilience alone is not enough; it is the harmonious combination of resilience and purpose that enables us to successfully navigate the complex waters of our professional journey, turning each experience into a step on the ladder of growth and fulfillment. Therefore, I can assert that resilience is a significant pillar, but not a guarantee of success!

Resilience Does Not Ensure Professional Success

Resilience is more than just a quality to be cultivated; it is an enriching state of consciousness, capable of being developed. However, it is not sufficient to guarantee a successful career. Concrete data reveals that 60% of people who abandon their professional goals do so not due to lack of skills, but because they fail to overcome obstacles with resilience. However, among those who identify as resilient, almost 70% stated feeling frustrated with their careers. When questioned about the reasons, it becomes clear that the primary reason is precisely the inability to find their own purpose. Therefore, we also need to learn to question why many of us give up on our career aspirations even before truly attempting them! Many of us already possess resilience within us, but the lack of a clear purpose often leads to the weakening of this ability.

It should be clear by now that resilience and purpose are like two intertwined musical notes, forming a harmonious melody. While resilience enables us to overcome challenges, it is purpose that gives us reason to face them with determination. The resulting symphony empowers us to face difficulties with hope, turning obstacles into opportunities. In other words, being resilient and facing challenges masterfully does not guarantee success if we do not know how to direct our efforts towards what truly matters to us.

And here come the smart questions we can ask ourselves: What is my purpose? How can I align my resilience with this purpose? What are the challenges that demotivate me the most, and how can I turn them into steps to achieve my purpose? But even questions like these are not enough to open the door to many other possibilities.

My practical experience in guiding clients towards solid careers has taught me that individual challenges, rooted in the journey towards success, are only truly valued when authentic. Similarly, trusting in our ability to lead our professional life towards concrete goals is intrinsically linked to willpower, much more than our desires. Without this internal compass, we may be immersed in a vast ocean of possibilities, but still, we will get lost and end up drowning.

Thus, in a world that constantly tests us, it is resilience that sustains us and purpose that guides us, but everything has to be related to what belongs to us. By balancing these two pillars, we shape our destiny with a mixture of tenacity and determination, making it possible not only to face but to thrive in the most intricate situations we can build with everything that truly makes sense for what we truly aim for in our lives. Resilience and purpose, when harmonized with the Self, become the solid foundation upon which we build our most remarkable achievements, proving that the journey towards success is not a simple melody but an epic symphony that we play with every step we take.

If you find yourself in this situation, I invite you to continue reading to learn how to deal with the impediments that keep you away from your career plans and goals!

In an increasingly noisy world, where Having is valued more than Being, it becomes very common for people to have difficulty seeing their own issues clearly and realistically. Just as it is normal for us to get lost between fear and reality. In this sense, we start attributing alienated justifications to reasons that are not actually real. That’s why I always tell my clients that whatever the journey, we must always remember that resilience is not just a quality, but a mindset that enables us to face challenges with optimism and learn from them, an active force that drives us to face challenges with a constructive attitude.

Demonstrating resilience in a professional career implies navigating pressures, dealing with negative feedback, overcoming frustrations from not being chosen for promotions or internal transfers, as well as facing challenging interviews with leaders, colleagues, and peers. It’s about knowing how to fall and get up stronger. Emerging from such situations, possibly with scars, but never devoid of strength or potential for improvement, is the essence of resilience that generates passion.

What Leads to Demotivation!

It is a striking irony: remarkably talented and resilient individuals often allow themselves to be undermined by demotivation in situations they deem below their expectations. The difficulty lies in their inability to perceive the connection between present events and the broader meaning they seek in their purposeful journey. This paradox is more than it appears: lack of clarity in purpose not only hampers the professional path but also casts shadows on the very essence of life.

On the other hand, there is an imperative scenario where the market clamors for talented minds as a vital resource, where behavioral skills resonate as strongly as academic credentials. It is a terrain where the sharp eyes of competition are always vigilant, an audience composed of visionary leaders, colleagues in search of inspiration, managers seeking innovation, and even silent adversaries who observe. This is the stage where feats are just part of the narrative, with the authenticity of passion being the plot that captivates and differentiates.

In such a competitive ecosystem, know that your journeys and choices may currently be undergoing meticulous scrutiny, almost like a forensic analysis. It’s not just about numbers and metrics but about the light that radiates from your ambitions and motivations. Each step is a possibility that contributes to the image of who you are and where you intend to go.

In this context, I hope you understand where I am going with the idea of purpose. It should not be seen as just another buzzword but as the life force pulsating in your journey. It is the foundation that, when nourished on resilience, transforms into an unmistakable beacon.

In the dance of life, resilience is the firm ground that sustains our steps, while purpose is the constellation that guides our path, even in the darkest nights. (Marcello de Souza)

The fact is that amidst ambitious plans and bold goals, what really attracts attention is not just the results but the journey itself. It is the authenticity of your choices, the depth of your aspirations, and the courage to face turbulence that forge the story you write in the fabric of the contemporary market. Each choice, each obstacle overcome, everything contributes to a unique narrative that not only reflects your abilities but also echoes the synchronicity between the resilience you exude and the purpose you embody.

The inevitable adversities in our professional journey are a certainty. However, genuine defeat only occurs when the will that propels us is extinguished. After all, it is this passion that ignites resilience and shapes purpose, reminding us that it is not enough just to persist but also to thrive, turning each obstacle into a step on the staircase of success.

“Resilience is the foundation that sustains life, and purpose is the compass that guides us. Together, they not only empower and shape but also transcend, turning the journey towards success into a deeply enriching and meaningful experience.” (Marcello de Souza)

Navigating the Career Journey

For example, how many times have you given yourself permission to delve deeply into your plans, identify your strengths, and reflect on the moments when resilience – or the lack thereof – was a deciding factor for your success? While it may seem simple or even trivial, know that this journey of self-discovery triggered by this exercise has the power to transform your perspectives. And why is this so valuable? We often underestimate our own achievements, efforts, and lessons learned through the difficulties we face to get to where we are today.

When I am with my client, I greatly appreciate approaching this theme through sincere dialogues that lead them to the most challenging paths they have ever experienced. Many of them are inspired by a sense of renewal that emerges when they realize they are at the edge of their journey but still far from the boundaries of their own dreams. These clients express the intrinsic desire to advance in their careers, aspire to more challenging achievements, or even completely redefine their professional direction, but the most difficult thing is to reach their true desires. It is the insecurity that often paralyzes them.

In this sense, during these interactions, a question always arises and is almost never reflected upon: what is the cost of wasted energy when someone remains dissatisfied in their position, desires change, but, due to inertia or adverse circumstances, which are not always real or worthy of realistic concern, ends up trapped in the sphere of frustration?

In this second semester of the year, consider whether it is not the right time to devise strategies that will propel you vigorously into the next year. Perhaps it is time to embark on a journey to review your professional trajectory. To guide you through this process, I propose that you follow these three steps inspired by My Career Coaching Processes with some exercises, aimed at creating a clearer vision aligned with your purposes.

Know that in this journey, several aspects require special attention. Therefore, tackle them in stages, placing them in your diary, responded with your own handwriting. During moments of deep peace and connection with yourself. No computer screen or virtual keyboard.

From these very simple exercises, allow yourself to highlight the ultimate goal (will) of your career: where you want to go and what you aspire to achieve. Careful assessment of each step and regular review of the path you have traced are fundamental. If you aim to take advantage of this period to conceive or adjust your career plan, I suggest three sets of exercises you can do with yourself. How about aiming higher and farther?

1st Stage: Exercises to Develop Resilience:

  • Practice self-compassion: Set aside moments to practice self-compassion, treating yourself with kindness and understanding in times of difficulty. This helps reduce self-criticism and build a more solid emotional foundation.
  • Visualize challenging scenarios: Imagine challenging situations that may arise in your career. Mentally explore how you would respond to these scenarios resiliently and positively. This can mentally prepare you to face real adversities.
  • Keep a gratitude journal: Daily, write down three things you are grateful for, even in the most difficult situations. This helps focus on the positive aspects of life, strengthening your ability to face challenges.
  • Practice reframing: Reinterpret negative situations in terms of learning and growth. Ask yourself: “What can I learn from this?” or “How can this strengthen me?”.
  • Set realistic goals: Define challenging yet achievable goals. By reaching them, you will build a sense of accomplishment and confidence in your ability to overcome obstacles.

2nd Stage: Exercises to Define YOUR Purpose:

  • Deep questioning: Dedicate time to reflect on your passions and interests. Ask yourself: “What excites me?”; “What activities make me feel fulfilled?”; “What would I do even if I weren’t paid for it?”.
  • “Why?” questioning: Reflect deeply on why you chose your current career and where you want to go. Ask yourself repeatedly “Why?” to reach a deeper understanding of your purpose.
  • Analysis of past experiences: Review your past experiences and identify moments when you felt most fulfilled and motivated. This can provide clues about your true passions and interests.
  • Identify your values: List the values that are most important to you in life and in your career. Ask yourself how your career choices can align with these values.
  • Interview with yourself: Imagine yourself in 5 or 10 years, reflecting on your career. Ask yourself: “What achievements do you want to have accomplished?”; “How do you want to be remembered?”.
  • Inspiring conversations: Talk to people you admire who are aligned with your values and aspirations. Learn from their stories and insights to inspire your own quest for purpose.
  • Write YOUR purpose statement: Create a concise statement that captures the purpose of your career and how you want to impact the world by following that purpose. This will serve as an inspiring guide.

3rd Stage: Exercises to Chart YOUR Journey:

  • Map Out Milestones and Challenges Along the Journey: With the end goal in mind, map out the positions or companies you aspire to reach throughout this journey. From this list, list the technical and behavioral competencies needed to excel in each position. Consider not only the technical aspect but also the human aspects that shape your professional presence.
  • Find Inspiration in Success Models: Identify professionals in the market who have reached the level you aspire to. Study their trajectories, analyze the skills they developed, and the challenges they overcame. This in-depth analysis can provide valuable insights for your own journey.
  • Set SMART Goals: Define specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound goals. This will help create a clear path for your professional journey.
  • Break it into Steps: Break down your larger goals into smaller, tangible steps. This will make the journey more manageable and allow you to celebrate achievements along the way.
  • Learn and Adjust: Be willing to learn from your successes and failures. At each step, evaluate what worked, what didn’t, and adjust your journey as needed.
  • Celebrate Victories, Big and Small: Throughout your journey, celebrate your accomplishments. The journey is filled with significant moments that deserve recognition. Celebrating each step not only strengthens your motivation but also enriches your journey with gratitude and satisfaction.
  • Be Aware of the Investment for Success: Know that success often requires additional effort. Be prepared to invest time in courses, skill development, and even in managing the demands between personal and professional life. Acknowledge the cost, but also be aware of the rewards.

If You Encounter Difficulty:

  • Seek Guidance from a Coach or, depending on your level, Seek Mentoring: Finding a reliable mentor can be invaluable for your journey. Sharing thoughts, concerns, and plans with someone who has walked a similar path can bring enriching perspectives and valuable advice.
  • Prioritize Well-being: Do not neglect mental and physical well-being during your journey. Self-care, seeking balance, and maintaining a positive mindset are fundamental elements to sustain your progress and prevent burnout.

These exercises, coupled with a deep understanding of resilience and purpose, will allow you to build a career that not only withstands challenges but also develops authentically and in alignment with who you are. Remember, resilience and purpose are like wings and roots, respectively, enabling you to explore the sky of opportunities while remaining grounded in your essence. The career journey is a continuous exploration, and with resilience and purpose as your guides, you are well-equipped to navigate its waters and reach significant destinations.

This is just a small part of what you can do to align resilience and purpose in your career. Exploration and learning are ongoing, but with dedication and commitment, you can create a rewarding and meaningful professional journey. Remember that you are the captain of your own ship, sailing towards a career filled with purpose and success.

Why is it so important not to give up on your career?

This question resonates in the hearts of those who yearn for a fulfilling professional path. In the complex universe of work, I hope you understand that the answer largely lies in the harmony between resilience and purpose. Our journey is shaped by challenges that require resilience – the ability to overcome obstacles and emerge strengthened. But to transcend and flourish, we need something more – purpose that gives meaning to each step. The combination of these elements forms the foundation of a successful and satisfying career where you will find your true self.

The career story is not just a linear progression; it is a mosaic of challenges and achievements that shape our legacy. Obstacles are not defeats but steps. Don’t just persist; thrive. Thus, your journey will be more than a melody – it will be an epic symphony. Resilience is your strength; purpose is your direction. Navigate with them to reach meaningful horizons. After all, your journey deserves to be lived with resilience, guided by purpose, and celebrated as a remarkable achievement that belongs solely to You.

Never give up! Re-signify always! Each step in this journey is an opportunity for discovery and growth. So, look beyond the limitations that may arise. Find the key that opens unexplored doors and face challenges as opportunities. In this new chapter unfolding before you, be assured that each challenge is an opportunity to demonstrate your values, and each achievement is the tangible result of your dedication. You are the protagonist of your career, and willpower is your invisible force that propels you. May this force guide you in every step of the way, reminding you that the potential for success lies in your own journey of overcoming. Now, it’s up to you to write the next page.

I reiterate: Never give up! Re-signify always! Each step in this journey is an opportunity for discovery and growth. I hope this phrase remains etched in your mind as an inspiration of the importance of never giving up, but rather finding new meanings and perspectives in every challenge we face. May it invite you to embrace adversity not as defeats but as opportunities to evolve and transform.

Re-signifying is giving new meanings and purposes to situations, allowing us to learn, adapt, and progress constantly. Every step, no matter how difficult, offers us an opportunity for internal growth, discovery of our capabilities, and a deeper connection with our values. Therefore, embrace life’s journey with determination, courage, and the conviction that by re-signifying each obstacle, we will enrich our journey and shape our destiny significantly.
